"My experiences with horses, especially on the bigger cattle ranches, convinced me there was value in taking time for careful preparation. It's something I still do with the horses."   -Mike Beck

A Little About Mike Beck's Horsemanship Clinics and Schools

" Do you want to have a safer more enjoyable relationship with your horse? Do you want to show your horse, trail ride, jump, do ranch work on him? Do you want to expand on what you and your horse already have working for you? Do you want a safer ride? Have more fun with your horse?

It seems like so many people are missing a basic foundation of togetherness with their horse. Let’s start by asking a few questions:

  • Is your horse dragging you around on the end of the halter rope?
  • Does your horse stand still and wait for you when you’re getting on?
  • Does your horse stand quiet for the horseshoer?
  • Does he load softly in the trailer and come out the same way?
  • Is he hard to catch?
  • How is he to bridle?
  • Will he leave the barn willingly?
  • Is he always lonesome for the other horses?
  • Is he always looking off, interested in everything else but you? Always looking for something to get scared of?
  • Does his world fall apart when you ask him to go to work for you?
  • And many more issues of not being together with your horse, of not having unity, of un-sureness between you and your horse?

I see these and many more problems everywhere I go. And the answer is pretty simple. People and their horses are not together. They lack sureness with each other, confidence, trust, harmony. All the things you need to be a team, to have togetherness.

"I've been fortunate to work with some of the finest horsemen who ever lived. Back in 1978, Bill Dorrance invited me to live up there at his ranch with him. We had a lot of fun back then. Bill was in his 70's at the time. He helped me with my roping taught me quite a bit about how to move and shape the cattle up. He helped with a horse I had up there and we stayed in the walk for about six months. It did me and the horse a lot of good."    -Mike Beck

When I help people at my horsemanship clinics, demos, or my horsemanship school here in Montana, I help people to see what’s missing in their relationship with their horse. The importance of building a foundation, of recognizing a horse’s sense of self preservation, of seeing things from The Horse’s Point of View.

We start with groundwork. It’s the safest place for the person to start to build togetherness with their horse. If you and your horse are not together on the ground, if he’s walking over the top of you, dragging you around on the halter rope, biting you, whatever, why would it suddenly be great and everything’s fine when you’re on his back?

Through starting with groundwork working your horse on the end of the halter rope from the ground I can help you build a strong foundation of togetherness, sureness, and confidence and trust with your horse.

I can show you how this work on the ground will carry over to when you get on your horse and ride. You’ll have a safer ride, more enjoyable for you and your horse. You’ll learn how to get the things we started on the ground working for you from the horse’s back. You’ll be able to build on and improve what you already have going with your horse.

Everyone who’s around horses, Jumpers and cowboys, show people and trail riders, horseshoers and veterinarians, many can and have benefited from this. I’ve been involved with helping all kinds of people and horses. This is real. It Fits The Horse."
